Brave Kwe by Andrea Burton Image: I was asked to illustrate Shannen Koostachin as a comic book hero by Tyler Twarowski who is the Director of Service at CMHA. We had revisioned her as a 23-year-old fierce Woodland Cree warrior with traditional clothing and weaponry, leaving on a morning hunt on the banks of Lake Temiskaming in Northern Ontario. Here is the storyline we added to the comic.

Brave Kwe Story:
It's 1860, 200 years since the great loss of our people and settlement of the Shagonash on Turtle Island, and 30 years since the white men began taking the youth to their schools. The Chief of the white-skinned people had pushed our nations off traditional territory. Young Brave Kwe had travelled this endeavour to speak with this chief of fish belly and prayed that she would find spirit in his eyes. This is one of many lost, untold stories.
