Message-
Artist: Bette Campbell
Bette Campbell was born in Ottawa where she received her early education. She
graduated from Glebe Collegiate and holds a B.A. degree from the University of
Toronto. The lure of Cobalt brought Bette and her husband, a geologist and mining
engineer, to Haileybury in 1952. The artist, Caroline MacArthur, was Bette’s first art
teacher and for several years she has studied palette knife technique at the
Schneider School of Fine Arts under Venie Vablis, an art instructor at Niagara
University.
An impressionist with two distinct styles – palette knife with oils, and drawing with
chalk pastels, Bette tries to capture the beauty of the northern landscape. The use of
the palette knife enables her to evoke the myriad colours of the Canadian seasons in
vibrant colour. The knife is also used to create vivid flower bouquets. Her pictures
done in pastels are soft and dreamy as opposed to the bold strokes of the knife.
Bette is a member of the Palette and Brush Club and the Northern Ontario Art
Association. In conjunction with Eleanor Huff she had an exhibit at the Temiskaming
Art Gallery, Science North in Sudbury and Ontario Place in Toronto. The City of
Timmins and the ONR building in Northbay have her paintings in their permanent
collection.
Bette was a founder and first director of the Temiskaming Art Gallery in Haileybury.
For this she was named Haileybury’s Citizen of the Year 1984. She won many prizes
and some of her pieces are in the Gallery’s permanent collection. 1.

Haileybury. 1.
