Helianthus. Native to eastern and central regions of the US and Canada, this short-lived perennial can be found growing in open woodlands, meadows, prairies, and fields. Commonly called oxeye sunflower or false sunflower, this tenacious plant is tolerant of a wide range of soils, is cold hardy, heat and drought tolerant, and is virtually carefree once established.
