MessageThis oil painting reflects one of my long-standing color obsessions: bright pink and red, a pairing that has followed me since my twenties. It began with a sweater my mother knitted for me, then appeared in clothing, and eventually in my paintings—an alliance of two colors I deeply value. This work is simply a dream of color and design, without intended meaning beyond that.
The composition suggests an imaginary landscape, with land and surrounding water. I enjoy transforming natural colors into unexpected ones—here applied to earth and water, though I have explored this approach with the human figure as well.
The small elements on the land originate from my earliest period, The Baby Vegetables Era, though they are now more stylized and less defined.
Part of a series of 18 beach and ocean oil paintings created between 1997 and 2001, this piece was later noted by someone as anticipating my “Newelry” series—something I hadn’t consciously realized at the time. The piece was rented with others for 2 years by the Armand Hammer rental program in Westwood, LA, and was hanging in the Oppenheimer Tower in Westwood (Architects office).
