Big Sister and Little Brother – Their Story

My friend, someone I hadn’t been in touch with for many years posted many photos of her daughter on Facebook. I asked permission to paint her. It was my intent to paint the child as identical twins, but did not tell my friend - not sure I’d be able to pull it off. As I painted the two side by side, something happened - a young boy appeared.

I’d promised my friend to show her along the way. It was then I stated my intent of twin girls, but instead, this little fellow appeared.

“I hope you don’t mind.” I said. She replied, “There was a little boy.”

Shortly after her daughter was born she found herself happily pregnant again. When a test revealed something she and her husband were not prepared for… they painfully terminated.

“Susan, your painting even captures what would have been his Down Syndrome characteristics. We have been looking for a sign…”

As an artist, I doubt I will ever have such a profound experience again.
