Sybil Atteck: A Life of Art and Influence

At The Whitworth, Manchester, UK - June 12, 2025 @ 6:00 pm

Atteck is recognized, nationally and internationally, as the “Mother of Visual Arts” of Trinidad and Tobago, leading the development of the modern art movement in the Caribbean region from the 1950s to the early 1970s.

Atteck mentored and nurtured many of the local artists of Trinidad and Tobago including such great artists as Althea McNish, whose internationally celebrated textile designs are represented in the Whitworth’s collection.

In 2022, the gallery acquired Sybil Atteck’s portrait of Althea McNish, which is currently on view as part of the collection display. Join Keith Atteck, the artist’s nephew and researcher of her legacy, to find out more about the artist behind this work and her connections to the UK.
