Mother Earth was the first magnificent creator. Mother of all beings, flora, and fauna. Among her many glorious gifts are the massive oak trees where I live. They were here long before I arrived. With my reverence and care they may speak to my grandchildren like they call out to me. I imagine them watching over me as my mother and grandmothers once did. These strong women hold their ground, provide nourishment, filter harmful rays, offer cool shade and shelter, provide limbs on which to venture out and a cushion of leaves should I fall. To me they are not only inspiration for artmaking but deities full of wisdom. Here, I represent the effect generations of women have on each other. The arrangement is evocative of like a family tree and takes the shape of a pyramid of hierarchy. Their roots are embedded deep into the earth and reach many layers. I was inspired by the International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers and portray them in tree form. Like my oak trees they stand for collective guidance and wisdom because they have been around forever.
