Artist: Reverend L. M. Phillips (1900-1991)
Reverend L. M. Phillips came to Columbus from New York to study and work at Zanerian College of Penmanship. He graduated from Episcopal Theological School at Kenyon College in 1939. Later he returned to Columbus in 1962 to serve as rector at St. John’s Episcopal Church on Town Street. Philips began to paint at age 59. He self-trained by replicating masterpieces such as Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper and Peter Paul Rubens’s Christ Triumphant Over Death. He eventually went on to paint many famous Columbus landmarks with careful, tight compositions, which helped preserved these architectural details. Philips gained the attention of collectors after his death in 1991.
