Artist: Ralph Fanning (American, 1889-1971)
Ralph Fanning was born in Riverhead, Long Island on November 29, 1889. He studied architecture at Cornell University, earning his undergraduate degree, then went on to earn two masters at the University of Illinois for history and architecture. He served in compassionate non-military service in France during World War I. In the 1920s, he joined The Ohio State University Art Department, becoming a full-time professor in 1924. He became a professor of American and European art history and served in that capacity for 37 years, painting his life and the campus environment all the while. The buildings of the area particularly interested him, as many of his works at the time included them.
