Artist: Paul-Henri Bourguignon (Belgian, 1906-1988)
Paul-Henri Bourguignon born in Belgium in 1906. He began his arts studies in Brussels' Académie des Beaux Arts and studied art history at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. His first solo exhibition was at the Galérie d'Egmont in Brussels at age 22. Bourguignon's early work was exhibited in Brussels, Antwerp, Bruges, Le Zoute, Paris, Marseilles, and Corsica and, later, in more than 50 solo exhibitions in the United States. As such, Bourguignon traveled around the world, visiting France, Spain, North Africa, Corsica, and Yugoslavia. He met his wife, Erika Eichhorn, in Haiti, and they settled in Columbus, Ohio in 1950 after she joined the faculty of The Ohio State University. Bourguignon worked with a variety of mediums, from gouaches and acrylics to pencil, pastel, and ink. His subjects were similarly varied, featuring landscapes, figure drawings, portraits, and genre scenes derived from his travels, often done in an expressionistic way. His works are found in museums and in collections throughout the United States and Europe, including the Columbus Museum of Art, the Musée d'Ixelles, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
