Artist: Paul Fjelde (American, 1892-1984)
Paul Fjelde was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in August 12, 1892. His family moved to North Dakota in 1902, shortly after his father’s death. Fjelde studied art at the State Normal School (now known as the Valley City State University) and later went on to study under Lorado Taft, a Chicago based sculptor known for his monument work, at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design and the Art Students League in New York. He also studied at a wide variety of other schools, including the Minneapolis School of Art, the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He later went on to become an instructor of sculpture at the National Academy School of Fine Arts in New York City. Fjelde is well-known for his Lincoln Monument in Frogner Park in Oslo, which became famous in World War II as a center for silent protest against Occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany. Citizens gathered at the statue in silent protest against the Nazi occupation of their country. His other works include the bronze portrait of Orville Wright in the Hall of Fame for Great Americans, the Wendell Willkie Memorial in the Indiana Statehouse, and the John Scott Bradstreet tablet at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Paul Fjelde created the eight elevator doors in the 1st Floor Lobby and the four bronze panels of the American Indian leaders located in the Civic Center Lobby.
