Artist: Leslie Cope (1913-2002)
Leslie Cope, born on August 10, 1913, is a landscape painter from Stoke-on-Trent England who moved to eastern Ohio in 1929. His father worked as a ceramic designer and nurtured his son’s interest in the arts. Cope worked with his father at the Mosaic Tile Company for a time before joining the United States Army during WWII where he worked as a camouflage artist. After retiring from the Army, Cope gave up pottery and decided to work primarily with watercolor and oil paint to capture the rural landscapes of Ohio and England, working with a semi-realistic impressionist style. Many of Cope’s works are gathered in collections throughout the US, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Smithsonian American Art, the Library of Congress, and the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.
