Artist: Kojo Kamau (American, 1939-2016)
Kojo Kamau was born in Columbus, Ohio, where he lived for most of his early life. Kamau studied at the Columbus College of Art and Design, The Ohio State University, and the Rochester Institute of Technology. He worked as the chief medical photographer at The Ohio State University and was a photography instructor at Columbus State Community College. Kamau is well-known for his expressive photographs documenting the lives and cultures of people in North and South America, Africa, and Europe, and has worked extensively in the U.S. and the Caribbean. His works focus on community, travel, political and social issues, as well as portraits of notable artists and musicians including Elijah Pierce and Nikki Giovanni. His work is the permanent collection of many institutions, including the Columbus Museum of Art, the Columbus Metropolitan Library, the Columbus State Library Art Collection, the Columbus Foundation, the Ohio Supreme Court, Central Ohio Transit Authority, and the Downtown Columbus Hilton Hotel.
