Artist: Kenneth Forbes (Canadian, 1892-1980)
Kenneth Keith Forbes, born July 4, 1892, was a Canadian portrait and landscape painter who supported the principles of realism. Kenneth Forbes studied at the Newlyn School in the U.K and later attended the Hospitalfield House in Scotland. He had a portrait accepted for exhibition at the Royal Academy at age 19, with twelve portraits in total begin exhibited there. In 1914, Forbes enlisted in the 10th "Pals" Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers and served in the military until his resignation in 1959. Forbes was an opposer to the abstract and modern art movement. He resigned from the Ontario Society of Artists in 1953 to protest against what he considered the unwarranted recognition and attention given to abstract art, and did the same for the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1958. That same year, Forbes and a group of other artists including Gordon Roy Conn and Manley MacDonald, created the Ontario Institute of Painters for traditional artists. He also published his book Great Art to the Grotesque to discuss his rejection of the artistic worth of abstract art. His painting entitled Canadian Artillery in Action is on display at the Canadian War Museum.
