Artist: Joseph O'Sickey (1918-2013)
Joseph B. O’Sickey was born in Detroit in 1918. After his family moved to Cleveland, he attended Saturday classes at the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Institute of Art, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1940. During WW II, he served in the U.S. Army in Africa, lndia, and Burma, creating 750 drawings during his time there. After returning, O’Sickey began teaching art, first at The Ohio State University, then at the KSU School of Art in the 1960s. He retired in 1989. O’Sickey won numerous awards, such as the Cleveland Arts Prize in 1974, and has had more than 50 solo exhibitions throughout his life. His work is in the permanent collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Canton Art Institute, the Roy Lichtenstein Collection, the Leonard Baskin Collection, and the German Seligmann Collection.
