Artist: John Henry Witt (American, 1840-1901)
John Witt was born May 18, 1840 in Wayne County, Indiana. Witt studied in Cincinnati during the late 1850s under Joseph Oriel Eaton before settling in Columbus, Ohio in 1862. His paintings primarily consisted of bible scenes, with "Rebecca at the Well" being his most well-known piece. He worked as a photograph tinter to support himself while he worked on his art. In 1865, he received a cash award at the Ohio State Fair for "best oil painting by an Ohio artist." By the 1870s he had established himself as a portrait painter and went on to paint several of Ohio's governor's portraits.
