Artist: John Cary (English, 1754-1834)
John Cary was an English cartographer who went on to become the standard reference for mapwork in England at the time. Cary served his apprenticeship as an engraver in London, before setting up his own business in the Strand in 1783. He published his atlas, The New and Correct English Atlas, in 1787 and was later commissioned by the Postmaster General to survey England's roads in 1794, resulting in Cary's New Itinerary (1798), a map of all the major roads in England and Wales.
