Artist: Howard Chandler Christy (American, 1872-1952)
Howard Chandler Christy was born in Morgan County, Ohio in 1872. Christy was an American artist and illustrator known for his iconic WWI military recruitment and Liberty loan posters. From the 1920s until the early 1950s, Christy was an active portrait painter who painted for many influential figures, including Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Amelia Earhart, Benito Mussolini, and Harry Truman. Christy was considered "the most commercially successful U.S. artist" by Time magazine in 1938. He painted his masterpiece in 1940, titled Scene at the Signing of the Constitution of the United States, which is installed along the east stairwell of the United States Capitol.
