Guillaume Delisle was born in Paris on February 28, 1675. He was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas. He started out by drawing maps for his father's historical works and later went on to study under the astronomer Jean-Dominique Cassini. He made his first map, the Carte de la Nouvelle-France et des Pays Voisins, in 1696. Delisle continued to study and create maps, expanding out past Europe to map the explored areas of the Americas and parts of Africa.
