Artist: Clarence Holbrook Carter (American, 1904-2000)
Clarence Holbrook Carter was born March 26, 1904, in Portsmouth, Ohio. In 1923, he began his studies at the Cleveland School of Art 1923 and earned key patronage from William Millikin, the director of the Cleveland Museum of Art, who arranged for Carter to study in Italy with Hans Hofmann during the summer of 1927. Carter’s earlier paintings depict rural America and the burden brought on by the Great Depression. His style changes to adopt a more surreal look by the end of World War II, undergoing themes of death, nature, and the metaphysical. Carter's work is found in many collections and museums, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Yager Museum of Art & Culture.
