Artist: Charles Sullivan (American, 1794-1867)
Charles Sullivan was born in Frankfort, Pennsylvania in 1794. Sullivan began to study art at the Pennsylvania Academy in the 1810s, taught by Thomas Sully, and later opened a studio in Philadelphia. He moved to Wheeling, West Virginia in 1827 then to Marietta, Ohio in 1833. Sullivan painted a variety of portraits, landscapes, and historical scenes, including river scenes done on the Ohio River and Native American earthworks in the Marietta vicinity. These earthwork paintings supply important historical information, as many of the sites no longer exist. Many of Sullivan’s works are contained at The Ohio History Connection's Campus Martius Museum in Marietta, Ohio.
