Artist: August Benziger (Swiss, 1867-1955)
August Benziger was born in Einsiedeln, Switzerland in 1867. His father was the head of a famous publishing company who went to America to establish a branch of the publishing house in New York City, where Benziger eventually followed. He went on to study art in Munich and Vienna, despite his father’s insistence that he study chemistry. Eventually, Benziger left his father to live with a friend in Paris, where he studied with William Bouguereau and Leon Bonnat at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Benziger was known to have painted high-profile subjects, notably American Presidents such as McKinley, Taft, and Roosevelt, along with J.P. Morgan and Charles Schwab. He also painted a portrait of Senator Shelby M. Cullom for the Senate Wing of the United States Capitol Building.
