Artist: Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson (American, 1940-2015)
Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1940. She was raised within the close-knit community of Poindexter Village, one of the country's first federally funded metropolitan housing developments. Robinson received her formal art training at the Columbus Art School (now the Columbus College of Art and Design) from 1957 to 1960, then studied art history and philosophy at Ohio State University, Franklin University, and Columbus' Bliss College from 1960 to 1963. Robinson was christened "Aminah" (derived from Aamina, mother of the Islamic prophet Muhamad) by an Egyptian cleric during her visit to Africa in 1979. She changed her name legally to include the forename in 1980. Her work is quite diverse in material and subject, ranging from drawings, woodcuts, and sculptures to complex mixed-media pieces made from a variety of materials and "hogmawg," her own material composed of mud, grease, dyes, and glue. Many of her works feature the ideas, culture, and spirits of Africa, such subjects that have traversed the transatlantic African Diaspora to the Americas. Her works have been represented in museums and galleries, including the Columbus Museum of Art, Akron Art Museum, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati.
