Artist: Abdi Roble (Somali, b. 1964)
Abdi Roble was born in Somalia in February 1964 and traveled the countryside with his father, a veterinarian who provided free care to sick farm animals. He moved to Washington, DC in 1989, then settled in Columbus, Ohio in 1990. Roble is known for his contributions to documentary photography, particularly in recording the emigration of his people from their native land to escape poverty and civil conflict. Many of his works documented the immigration of Somalis to the United States and their attempts to maintain their cultural identity in a new land. He later went on to do the same in Europe in 2007. His intentions are to help draw worldwide attention to the plight of the Somali people and others who are forced to leave their homelands and to provide the Somali people with an archival record of this life-changing experience.
