Wildlife of the West
- acrylic paint
- Michael Calles
Artist Michael Calles created the artwork on this Chase upright piano at the Summit County Library, Kamas Valley Branch in 2019.
As a longtime lover of landscapes and wildlife of the west, Michael has painted a landscape with a doe and buck pronghorn from Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area on the front panel. The back panel depicts a bear in the Bear River Mountains in Cache County. The side panels showcase portraits of native Utah wildlife including deer, moose and mountain lions.
Originally from the northeast, Michael has always loved the west. After completing his studies at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, CT, he packed his bags and came west. He lived and painted in and around Wyoming and fell in love with painting landscapes and wildlife. He went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree and a Masters of Fine Arts from Utah State University and continued to study wildlife work of Wilhelm Kuhnert, Carl Rungius, Bob Kuhn and more. Music and nature is where he derives his inspiration from and he hopes someone can get their inspiration from his work on this Art Piano as well.
Piano is located in the entry foyer of the library.
Art Pianos for All, founded by local photographer and artist Mark Mazierz, seeks to bring back the piano as a centerpiece of music, community, art, and fun by placing artist decorated pianos in public areas for all to play. An annual pop-up concert series utilizing the pianos began in 2019 and features professional Utah orchestra members playing the pianos on site.
