Shenzhen 4 is one in a series of ink and watercolor drawings on paper in the spirit of Paul Klee's "taking a line for a walk" that were done when I was teaching at Shenzhen University in China. Here as elsewhere, I set out to paint cities the way I paint mountains, taking the city as a phenomenon of nature and creating a landscape. The lines in this piece are the lines of buildings and cranes rising outside my window in Shenzhen (lines that often made me think of Carl Sandburg's Chicago).
