Watercolor on 140 lb cold pressed paper [unframed] | 2018. My grandpa's accordion has lived in our house since he died over 40 years ago. It's been on a high shelf for years, but I take it down occasionally. I hadn't played it for a long time, so when I took it down recently, I didn't know what to expect. But I'm happy to report it breathed easily, and there was still music in it. Our old cat Towanda, who died three years ago when she was almost twenty years old, used the accordion as a pillow from the time she first managed to scramble up to the top of the book shelf where I kept it. I had Grandpa and Towanda in mind when I painted this -- and, as is the case with most memories, I suppose there is more than one ghost in it. But given the way she took to the accordion and made it her own, I have a feeling Grandpa's spirit is present in both. The painting is unframed. It could be trimmed and matted with an 11x14 inch opening, for a frame size of about 20x24 inches.
