Corona 10 is acrylic on bamboo (a repurposed breadboard) and was created for a show (“hello darkness”) in Terre Haute, Indiana, in the path of totality during the April 2024 solar eclipse. Like most of my paintings, it began with three “primary” pigments (a blue, a red, and a yellow) plus white. The “corona” of the title is titanium white on a field created by mixing all three of the primary pigments, moving from blue through yellow (making green) then red, from brown to black. The disk around which the corona is formed uses the same pigments as the background – with subtle differences you may not notice on first glance but are likely to see as you scan the surface closely. The colors of both the disk and the background belong to the category “qing" (青) that can range from green through blue to black. It is sometimes described as “the color of nature," so I find it intriguing that it takes in all the colors of the rainbow in contrast here with the white of the corona that reflects them.
