The title is from the gospel of John (19:27), part of the first of three phrases Jesus speaks from the cross in that account. I have focused on the image of three women, all named Maria, who are standing together in the shadow of the cross in John's account. The words of the title are addressed to "the disciple he loved" (who is described as standing nearby), but they are prompted by the sight of the three women (one of whom is the mother of Jesus).
