Original mixed media abstract oil painting by Stevenjohn McHugh titled "Flat Earth". Measures 19.5" x 15" x 1.5. Framed size is 20.25" x 15.75 x 2.5". Mixed media with oil stick, marker, oil, graphite, charcoal and cold wax on Arches oil paper glued on wood panel with PH balance glue. Side of wood cradle (solid wood) is varished natural. Signed on front and back. Framed is a vanished gallery frame solid wood. "Flat Earth" is an abstract painting with a dynamic composition that combines various textures, forms, and colors. The canvas is divided into sections, each with a distinct visual theme but still part of a cohesive whole. In the upper left quadrant, vibrant colors such as pink, yellow, and a touch of green mix with each other, creating an almost nebulous effect that gives the impression of movement and energy. There are black marks and a large, smile-like pink arc that stand out against the luminous background, suggesting a sense of joy or playfulness. Moving to the right, there are blocks of blues and greens with overlaying black and white strokes, creating a grid-like pattern that contrasts with the more chaotic section beside it. I am a mixed media non-representational abstract painter. I’m inspired by looking at broken asphalt roads, pushed ice sheets in the bay, lichens on old trees, mangled flattened soda cans and the unintended compositions created.

I start all my paintings with intuitive marks and gestures, then the layering of colors, creating textures; scraping away adding marks, subtracting and reconstructing, then repeating. In this process I will chose clashing colors, change the composition and will break all the rules. First comes the chaos, then some order and clarity.

I want the viewer to constantly discover new elements and details in my paintings, and bring their own interpretations and reactions to my thousands and thousands of actions.

You’ll find charcoal, graphite, gunpowder, sand, crayons, oil stick, oil and cold wax, even photography within and on paper and canvas, primed and un-primed, sandwiched on to wood panels.

I live and work on a very small Island in Lake Superior, Madeline. I spent my first three decades creating photographic advertising images. I plan to spend my last decades creating soul driven images. The act of painting, creating, is as essential to me as air and water.
