After my first visit to the Pilbara region, once again the vastness of the Australian Landscape taught me a lesson that we cannot make assumptions about the blank places on our personal maps. Unlike the arid Western Deserts the Pilbara is visited by wet season tropical rains which transform the landscape on an annual cycle. Yes this landscape is essentially made of iron, but it goes rusty once a year. Then the prevailing winds turn the rest of Outback Australia red.
