This work references the ways in which history repeats itself—how we can pinpoint similarities in both strategies of oppressors and resistance movements, almost like an echo through history. My work holds deep connections to music, especially as someone who was raised on soul music and gospel. There’s a visual repetition happening in this work with the repeated squares, which are the color of yellow post-it notes to call to mind annotations and both written and musical notes. The central photograph was made in the 1950s by my grandfather, who was an educator and photographer in Dallas, Texas. Two impressions of the same image were made with dye and then stitched together in a way that visually references glitching and the moving image.
