Whale and Crustacea
I am an artist living on the English coast in Kent. However, when I lived on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia, I used to walk my dog on the beach after lunch on most days. I saw so many whales in 2013 that I decided it was time to paint them. I started painting whales in 2013, and there are now 32 whale paintings, all of which have been sold.
The majority are of Migaloo, a white humpback whale who travels Australia's east coast the rest are mainly Humpback Whales and two are of Blue Whales.
I came across something really inspiring while researching humpback whales online.
An all-white whale was photographed passing Byron Bay, Australia's most easterly point, on June 28, 1991. The whale, named Migaloo by the indigenous community of Queensland ("White Fella"), was the world's only documented all-white humpback whale at the time.
Migaloo, at the time, represented the vulnerability of the humpback population to me. Whaling in the southern ocean is still being done for "Scientific Research" by the Japanese. My Migaloo-themed series of paintings tells the story of his journey up and down the coast while also highlighting potential threats to his well-being.
My shift to environmental and environmental care topics was significant in this series because, as my concern for Migaloo's well-being grew, so did my concern for our oceans.
Migaloo has become a symbol for all living creatures and the fragility of the environment since 2013.
