"Tea Time"
A Pair Boro Placemats with Removable Opal Jewelry (two pieces)
Original 1/1
Mixed Media: Repurposed Denim, Flannel and Leather, Cotton Thread, Black Opal, Palladium, Sterling Silver
C. 2024
These intimate placemats celebrate the art of slowing down and creating sacred spaces for connection.
Each piece features over 1,000 hand-stitches, employing traditional Japanese sashiko and boro techniques to unite repurposed denim, flannel and leather into a meaningful whole. The meticulous hand-stitching serves as a meditation on patience, care, and the beauty of intentional renewal.
Uniquely, each placemat incorporates a removable black opal pendant and chain, seamlessly integrated into the textile design. These jewelry elements can be worn when the placemats are stored or being refreshed, carrying the spirit of intimate gatherings with you. Created as a set of two, these pieces are specifically designed for the most meaningful of shared moments - whether over ceremonial tea, a delicious meal or conversation with a cherished companion.
While the pieces can be displayed as wall art, their true purpose is realized in use. Through use, the edges will fray and the cloth will gain more character in its appearance. They serve as both a physical and metaphorical foundation for intimate connection, encouraging us to pause, be present, and honor the sacred act of spending quality time with those closest to us.
This art work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, signed by the artist, and artist statement. The pieces also include individual displays (Acrylic & Wood or Shadow boxes).
