River Care - Feeling like a River

Affective care as art-based practice

River Care - Feeling like a River

Are we humans ready to receive care from the natural sentient world in a time of crisis?

A question that occupies me when I hear news about how human beings need to control a sentient natural world as if it is an object to be controlled and regulated. What if we are sick and need to give control to the natural world rather than thinking we human beings can control everything?

This project considers affect and care while exploring mutuality and connectedness through dialogic and empathic encounters with the river Ems. I relate this project to a practice of affective care, which is the act of deep listening, unconditional empathy, and emotional support while in the presence of the being I care for. It is a way of communication that may bridge cultural gaps and foster trust. This study situates my practice of intercultural care through intimate relational and reciprocal encounters with the river.
