Hewison House
- Etching
- John Spooner
Leading Australian artist and The Age cartoonist John Spooner has generously donated a limited edition of 65 stunning etchings to St. Michael's Grammar School.
Hewison House is a glorious 19th century villa in the grounds of St Michaels in St Kilda. Featuring stunning Doric columns, a colonnaded veranda and ornate casting balustrading, it nestles amid the most picturesque of gardens, in the shade of majestic trees.
Originally known as Elmwood when it was built in 1868, Hewison House was a major work by leading architects Thomas Crouch and Ralph Wilson. Widely considered to be one of the most sophisticated surviving examples of a 19th century Melbourne villa, its distinctive "renaissance revival" style is reminiscent of the work of 16th century genius Andrea Palladio. Today, Hewison House is the home of the St Michaels Centre for Overseas Students and the Language Centre.
An enchanting study of light and shade, John Spooner's Hewison House is a charming rendition of this notable piece of Australiana.
