A view on the Homer Spit, at Homer, Alaska on Kachemak Bay, on the Kenai Peninsula south of Anchorage. At left, K Bay is beyond the boat harbor. A glacier can be seen in the mountains across the bay. Notice the white superstructure of an Alaska State Ferry at the far side of the harbor, maybe next bound for Kodiak from here. Some aqua-green metal buildings are along the far side of the harbor. On the harbor pier structure connected to the spit has a blue pickup truck with white camper top backed up to off or unload cargo, including perhaps ice chests with fish. A gangway leads down to the floating dock that rises and falls with the twenty-foot tides. The tall black poles keep the dock in place as it floats up and down the poles. The busy harbor includes some big commercial fishing boats. A big aluminum skiff with an outboard motor has three men standing in it as it moves along at harbor speed. Gift shops and cafes are on the spit. A sign says 'FOOD' in tall skinny letters. Trapper Cabin has GIFTS. A couple guys are getting ice over on the right edge of the painting, in front of a place that does fishing charters. Down the line of vehicles parked in front of us, there is a camper-size trailer home, a blue tarp tied down on the roof. The door is open to screen door. Parked right next to us is an old blue Ford Bronco, with custom steel bumper welded on the front. Small groups of people, mostly men it looks like, are scattered about, engaged in life on the Spit. This was painted on the Spit in September of 1996, just after most of the summer visitors have headed south. On watercolor paper board.
