This painting was done from 35mm photographs the artist made in the Clearwater Mountains above the Denali Highway on an early September day, about 1984. In the foreground, texture in the rolling tundra was created by addition of pieces of dried paint scraped from the palette and mixed into lead white oil paint. The sky is subtle pale gray, and at some time that part of the painting suffered light damage and repainting began. From time to time more work was done on the sky and the rolling tundra was modified, too. While seated up there looking out at the view, a female caribou suddenly appeared in front of the artist. Only her head and shoulders were visible. Walking up the slope, she stopped when she saw the artist. She looked back to her left where the artist had earlier observed a small group of six or eight caribou. Then she turned away and disappeared. After waiting for a few minutes to avoid scaring her, the artist walked to the ridge to watch her but she was nowhere to be seen. To date, the painting has never been considered totally finished. Maybe a female caribou will be added to this painting.
