The flying pig has become a symbol of Topanga Canyon since the year 2010 when local artist Chris Budzin began hanging his colossal concrete sculptures along the commuter highway Topanga Canyon Blvd which connects the San Fernando Valley with the Pacific Coast Highway and west side of Los Angeles. The largest sculpture weighing over 200 pounds is made of concrete and chicken wire flies erected on a 15 ft pole facing skyward with an optimistic smile upon its face. Other sculptures dangle over the winding roads of Topanga Canyon and hang from trees in the yards of collectors homes. Another popular rendition of the Flying pig is a pure concrete wall mount that graces the front doors, walls, and fences of homes and businesses alike. 14 years later The flying pig is now recognized by many as the optimistic symbol of Topanga. It wasn't until Budzin was included in the 2024 Topanga Locals group show at SPACE art + supply that the public not only gained access to these beloved sculptures but also the story behind their creator. Magical things happen 'When Pigs Fly' and pigs do indeed fly in Topanga Canyon (and where ever these sculptures land) thanks to Budzin's ingenuity and imagination.
