“As I paint using thin layers of watercolor, I introduce subtle color shifts and treat the paint in a way to allow for spontaneity. Like memories, some details stand out, and others meld together in soft colors. For this ongoing series, I was inspired by the traditional art of
quilt-making, paying homage to my grandmother who was a quilt maker and also incorporating different imagery from nature that compels me.”

Laura Jewell received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking from the University of South Dakota. Often moved by the subtle beauty of her surroundings, her subjects almost exclusively come from nature as she takes in details that create the intrigue of a location. Her findings are documented in notes and photos, which allow the details to resurface as the texture, color, and general inspiration for her work. Laura’s work is exhibited throughout the Midwest in solo and group shows, and collections. She is a South Dakota Arts Council grant recipient.
