“The chicken yard was a relatively quiet place, yet going there was a social event. The chickens would gather around her as she moved through the yard. They had a calming effect on her. When they were really laying, she'd have several dozen eggs to take into town on Saturday and maybe have a little money left over to get something nice. In the painting, the figure appears metaphysical. She seems to float on the picture plane. The form of the chicken house
is suggested to the left, and windblown lilacs and a scrub box elder tree appear on the right. The
figure is framed by a glowing light representing the spiritual quality every farm wife possesses.”
Tim Vogl graduated from Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD with a Bachelor of Science in art education. Tim received his Master of Arts in studio painting from Minnesota State University, Mankato, MN. In addition to many years as a high school art teacher, Tim also served in the South Dakota Army National Guard as a recruiter and taught a National Guard marketing course. He was a humanities associate professor at Oglala Lakota College, He Sapa Extension.
