Since 1979, Roger Broer (Oglala Lakota) has been a full-time print maker, painter, and sculptor, winning numerous national awards. His work is held in private, corporate, and public collections, including the U.S. Department of Interior in Washington, D.C.; the Museum Of Nebraska in Kearney; and The Brinton Museum in Big Horn, Wyoming. Roger earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Montana in Billings, and completed his graduate work at Central Washington University. He has been a invitational artist, juror, and board member for several national organizations, and presented lectures, workshops, residencies, and consultancies. Roger has been a longtime board member of the South Dakota Arts Council.
Roger Broer is an enrolled member of the Oglala Lakota Nation who lives and works in Hill City, SD. Roger Broer is known throughout South Dakota and beyond for his unique expressive paintings and monotype prints. During his career, he has exhibited in more than 300 solo and group exhibitions and received over 50 awards. Broer is recognized as one of the fathers of American Indian art in South Dakota. He was a founder of the Dream Catchers Guild of Native artists. He was most recently awarded the 2025 South Dakota Governor’s Award in the Arts for Outstanding Creative Achievement.
Broer has consistently made time to teach workshops for the USD Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute and has been an integral part of this program. He has inspired many students to attend college or art school and earn college and graduate degrees to pursue careers in art. Broer has supported many new art markets to emerge in SD, including Native POP and the Northern Plains Indian Art Market, for which he continuously recruits new artists as the next generation of South Dakota artists and leaders.
