This pink slip of paper, cut from an autograph album, bears the clear signature of Richard Norris Williams, 2nd.
Williams boarded Titanic with his father, traveling first class. Shortly after Titanic collided with the iceberg, Williams freed a passenger who had become trapped in their cabin by breaking down a door. He was observed and sternly reprimanded by a steward, who threatened to fine him for damaging White Star Line property, an event that inspired a scene in James Cameron's film 'TITANIC' (1997).
Williams survived the sinking but suffered severe frostbite to both legs, to the point where his doctors recommended amputation. As a talented professional tennis player, Williams refused, and struggled his way through a painful recovery. Williams went on to win the US Open mixed doubles trophy in August of 1912, a mere four months after the sinking, alongside his partner, Mary K. Browne.
