In LOVE GARDEN PARTY (Picnic #3) two girlfriends among a group of girlfriends gathered outdoors on a manicured lawn for sake and Japanese cuisine, are seated at a table covered in white linen and floral arrangements.
In this series my working pictorial format employs a shallow depth of field that brings the viewer into intimate space with the women. Standing before the painting, the perspective is that of an observer raising a glass from across the table, or capturing the moment with a smartphone.
Themes of the series reference the politics of Love, women in art history, the social constructs of Beauty in pop culture, the social media gaze, celebrity status, fashion, cross-cultural aesthetics and hip-hop style. The piece is an expressionistic interpretation that make obvious the sublime influences of Botticelli and Beyoncé, Rhianna and Bantu hair knots, the jazzy energy of Romare Bearden’s collages, and the pensive geishas depicted in Kitagawa Utamaro’s 17th century Ukiyo-e woodcuts.
Love Garden Party (Picnic #3) is an original mixed-medium painting on Strathmore watercolor paper stock. The materials used are high quality acrylic paints, opaque, metallic, and neon inks, hand-cut collage, sourced from fashion magazines and Japanese cookbooks, sealed with satin varnish on 36"h x 24"w cold press watercolor paper. The finished work of art is custom framed 41.5”h x 29.5”w. with white contemporary molding and conservation quality high UV-filtering Museum glazing. Artwork is signed by artist Skip Hill and includes certificate of authenticity.
