My working pictorial format begins by setting the stage with a shallow depth of field that brings the viewer into an intimate space with the figures and the interesting details in the foreground. The viewer’s perspective is that of an observer raising a glass from across the table, or taking a photo of the moment with a smartphone.
Themes reference the politics of Love, the role of women in Art history, the social constructs of Beauty in pop culture, the social media gaze, celebrity status, Fashion, cross-cultural aesthetics and Hip Hop style. The art is an expressionistic interpretation that makes obvious the sublime influences of Botticelli and Beyoncé, Rhianna and Bantu hair knots, the jazzy energy of Romare Bearden’s collages, and the pensive geishas depicted in Kitagawa Utamaro’s 17th century Ukiyo-e woodcuts.
'Love Garden' (Picnic #2) is an original mixed-medium work of art composed of high quality acrylics paint, opaque, metallic and neon inks, hand-cut collage, sealed with satin varnish on 36"h x 24"w on cold press paper stock. Painting is framed (41.5"h x 29.5”w.) with conservation quality, high UV-filtering museum glazing. Signed by the artist.
