Love Garden Party "I Didn't Know Kitsune Would Be Here!" is an expressionistic image of two fashionable women enjoying Japanese cuisine and sake. The work is informed by graphic elements of still-life paintings, and 17th century Japanese prints featuring portraits of pensive geishas. One of the women peeks from behind a "kitsune" mask. In Japanese folklore, Kitsune are intelligent foxes that possess paranormal abilities that increase as they get older and wiser. According to yōkai folklore, all foxes can shapeshift into human form. While some folktales speak of kitsune employing this ability to trick others, other stories portray them as faithful guardians and friends. Kitsune are commonly portrayed as lovers, usually in stories involving a young human male and a kitsune who takes the form of a human woman. The kitsune may be a seductress (Foxy Lady!), but these stories are most often romantic in nature.
