The maker, Louise Alexander Jefferis, was born in Massachusetts of Scotch-Irish decent and married Charles Jefferis. Lousie died at an early age. Charles and their only daughter, Nella moved to Toronto, Canada. Nella came to be on the stage with John Drew and the Barrymores. Later she became the director of the Canadian National Dramatic Festival and served in that until her death in 1945. The quilt traveled to the home of her uncle's wife, Ruby, in Lawrence, Kanasa. When Ruby died the quilt went to her son Mark in San Jose, CA in 1982.

Made from silk woven ribbons, silk prints, and some of the velvets have a three-dimensional surface. The stitches display a wonderful skill with embroidery making it a work of art. One patch has a sample of needle weaving. The blue velvet border is 7.5" wide.
