Unsung Heroines of African-American Suffrage

Researching suffragist Ethel Williams of Detroit, Michigan, led me to discover many women of African-American descent who participated in the Women’s Suffrage Movement. I felt compelled to include many of these women who were forgotten due to the racism of the time. Since black suffragists were not given their rightful place among the main Women’s Suffrage Movement marches, I chose to include as many as I could in this memorial quilt, paying homage to their valiant efforts in helping push through the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution.

Investigar a la sufragista Ethel Williams de Detroit, Michigan, me llevó a descubrir muchas mujeres de ascendencia afroamericana que participaron en el Movimiento por el Sufragio Femenino. Me sentí obligada a incluir a muchas de estas mujeres que fueron olvidadas debido al racismo de la época. Dado que a las sufragistas negras no se les dio el lugar que les correspondía entre las principales marchas del Movimiento por el Sufragio de las Mujeres, decidí incluir a todas las que pude en esta colcha conmemorativa, rindiendo homenaje a sus valientes esfuerzos para ayudar a impulsar la 19ª Enmienda a la Constitución de Estados Unidos.

Nghiên cứu về nhà đấu tranh cho quyền bầu cử Ethel Williams ở Detroit, Michigan, đã khiến tôi phát hiện ra nhiều phụ nữ gốc Phi đã tham gia Phong trào Quyền lợi cho Phụ nữ.
