"Soft Target 8" is part of a series by artists Rebecca Herman and Mark Shoffner. They aim to question how architecture and historical sites can be sites of cultural interaction, but also may be marked as targets in military conflicts. "Soft Target 8" is inspired by one of the geometric patterns found in The Mosque of the Prophet Yunus, built on the site believed to be the burial place of Jonah. Known in the West as ‘Jonah’s Tomb,’ the site was revered by Muslims, Christians, and Jews. This interconnectedness made it a target, and the building was destroyed by ISIL in 2014.
