Savannah Cloth was inspired by African mud cloth from Bamako in southern Mali and strip weaving from the Savannah lands of West Africa. A combination of physical constraints (e.g. loom size) and aesthetic criteria (e.g. means of combining strips) leads to the unique relationship between piece and whole in these works. In more than any other art form I have encountered, the pieces push the limits of maintaining and individual integrity while still working together as a whole.
